GUADELOUPE: A TRAVEL GUIDE
Guadeloupe and Martinique are both small island groupings, yet thriving with French culture. These two overseas regions of France play an important role. They are a very important part of France for the culture, people, and the history.
Guadeloupe. A foreign and seemingly complex word to many, and yet it is a world of beauty. Guadeloupe is part of the Lesser Antilles (chain of volcanic islands) in the Caribbean. It is an overseas region of France, and is split into two main islands- Basse-Terre to the west, and Grande-Terre to the east, with many smaller islands. Although these two are separated, a channel runs between then and is crossed by many bridges for easy travel. It is often just noted as one large island, by such like Christopher Columbus. During Christopher Columbus's second trip to America, he stopped in Guadeloupe, seeking fresh water. In 1946, the colony of Guadeloupe became an overseas department of France. Guadeloupe is a fascinating place, each small island offers something different, while they all connect back to their French Caribbean roots.

Guadeloupian cuisine features many Creole specialties with strong French influences. Curry dishes are very popular along with seafood. Dishes are well-seasoned with good uses of spices and local fruits, such as the star-shape carambole. Numerous French pastries are served with a Creole twist- you might even find one of the locals favorites, crawfish crepes with Creole cream sauce! Regional drinks include Rum punch, French wines and champagnes, although the drinking age is still 18. Tipping is generally around 15%.
